NBCA began a public awareness campaign in 1998 called "Bring Back the Boardwalk," which resulted in the city building a concrete hike-and-bike path along the beach that is now called the "Corpus Christi Beachwalk." It starts at Dolphin Park and stretches 1.5 miles to end at the Texas State Aquarium.
NBCA secured a national grant from Kaboom and organized 100 volunteers to install a new playground at Dolphin Park in 2018. Since then, NBCA has continued to adopt this city park on the north end of North Beach and helps to maintain it. We recently painted the concrete dolphins pink and blue.
As part of NBCA's adoption of Dolphin Park playground, our organization installed a wooden box for books, toys and sidwalk chalk for children and families who visit the playground. Anyone can add to or take from this box, which is just one part of what makes our neighborhood a community.
NBCA has been working with elected officials and local biologists over the past 10 years to create a public amenity called the North Beach Eco Park that will be dedicated to preservation of the wetlands and important shore bird feeding habitat they provide. The park will include boardwalks and educational signage about the native ecosystem.
NBCA's History Committee, Carrie Meyer (left) and Dr. Barbara Welder, worked for two years as volunteers to research and compile information about this history of North Beach since the 1800s and compiled it into 16 outdoor educational panels that now make up the North Beach History Plaza located on N Shoreline Blvd near Pier 99 Restaurant.
NBCA has advocated for three boardwalks to be built on North Beach, providing ADA access from parking lots to the Beachwalk and the beach. The boardwalks arch across low-lying marsh lands that can be flooded during seaonal high tides, so they ensure beach users can get to the beach safely.
Receiving a grant from County Commissioner Mike Pusley, NBCA commissioned 15 engraved granite mile markers to be placed along the Beachwalk every 1/10th of a mile to help those exercising to keep track of how far they have gone. The grant was to help increase diabetes awareness.
NBCA has organized and led several "Take A Walk on the Beachwalk" events, a free community group walk aimed at increasing awareness of the 1.5-mile-long concrete "Beachwalk" that runs right alongside the water on North Beach.
NBCA has held many neighborhood cleanups over the years, relying on volunteers to step forwards to help out. Our clean up efforts normally focus on the north half of North Beach, which is where most of our members live in condos and single-family homes.
NBCA led the charge in 2009, asking the city to rename this area "North Beach," which was its name during the 1920s-1950s. In the 1950s, the city changed the name to "Corpus Christi Beach," thinking it would help with tourism, but five decades later people were still referring to it as "North Beach," so the Council voted to go back to the original name.
NBCA offers individuals running for local elected office a platform where they can state their views and speak to our members during election season. Every other year in October, we hold a "Candidates Forum" where our members can shake hands and have a conversation with the candidates who are asking for their vote.
NBCA hosts a National Night Out BBQ on North Beach every October to bring North Beach residents and police together. This fun social event helps citizens understand the role police play in keeping them safe and helps police to know who lives in this area that they are protecting day and night. It's how we show the police our appreciation.
